Summer 2018 Program Information
In summer 2016, the Blackburn Institute launched a successful pilot program to connect students with mentors (Blackburn Society members, Advisory Board members, or Fellows) on experiential learning projects that had a positive impact on the state of Alabama. Funding for this program has been continued for summer 2018.
The goals of this program are to provide:
- Meaningful relationships between students and the rest of the Blackburn community;
- Structured opportunities for intergenerational collaboration and learning;
- Experiential learning opportunities that allow students to take action on their values; an
- Tangible work products that will be of benefit to community partners and have a positive impact on the state of Alabama.
Experiences will range in duration from 6 to 12 weeks, are completed between May and July, and take place in Alabama or Washington, DC. Students will be provided with a financial award to cover reasonable living and project expenses, up to a maximum of $5,000. There are two paths to participation for both students and mentors:
- Submit a project proposal for a specific idea (February 19, 2018 deadline); or
- Review the submitted proposals and request to be matched (March 18, 2018 deadline).
