As a community, we are called to networking through the generations by providing opportunities for students and fellows to engage in dialogue and personal contact with advisory board members, alumni, faculty, community leaders, scholars, and political leaders. One way in which this is accomplished is through local and regional gatherings of our community each summer. These Summer Networking Events provide an opportunity for our community to come together in a less formal setting than the Annual Symposium and Spring Networking Dinner.

In early spring of each year, a list of potential locations is compiled and includes our regular sites – Birmingham, Huntsville, and Montgomery, AL and Washington, DC – as well as additional Alabama and regional sites that change year to year. These additional sites have included Mobile, AL; Nashville, TN; Atlanta, GA; and New York, NY in recent years. While traditionally a dinner gathering hosted at a restaurant or home, future changes may be preceded by discussions with issue experts, half-day local travel experiences, planning for issue-specific action, a civic engagement project, or other activities.

Fellows interested in facilitating a discussion or organizing an activity around one of the Summer Networking Events may contact Kathryn Drago, Coordinator of Blackburn Alumni Programs, by email ( or phone (205-348-2536).

A listing of all schedule Summer Networking Events is available on the Blackburn Institute’s calendar.
